Custom Brace Helps Baby Shaun from Children’s Rehabilitation Center to Stand for the First Time

Spinal Bifida custom brace helps Shaun stand for the first timeSpina Bifida is the second leading form of childhood disability, next to Cerebral Palsy. Shaun, a patient at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC) in White Plains New York, is diagnosed as having this congenital defect. Like any child with the same type of Spina Bifida and spinal level lesion as Shaun’s, weakness of the core and lower extremities, areas of tightness, and breathing difficulties, to name a few, are present. This is the reason why he finds it difficult to roll and move around when on the mat, the same way that he finds it difficult to maintain upright positions such as sitting and standing. A custom brace that was designed for him positions his trunk and legs optimally so that he could have a stable base to work from when performing table-top activities geared towards improving head control, reaching, and even social interaction. His tolerance towards the brace and his endurance in standing has increased significantly the past few months. The rehabilitation team at CRC and his family are very happy to see him responding well to the brace. Shaun’s smile is reward enough. Seeing him happy and engaged makes everything that we do for him at CRC worthwhile.
