Responsibilities

The Occupational Therapist provides treatment plan to improve or minimize residual physical disabilities of the patient. They work with people of all ages with various health issues in many different settings such as clinics, hospitals, and nursing facilities. The duties of an Occupational Therapist include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assessing patient needs, plans, evaluates, and modifies care to meet goals of Occupational Therapy Interventions
  • Helping develop individualized plan of care with realistic functional goals and revises as necessary
  • Observing patients’ response to treatment physically and psychologically and adjusts the treatment plan accordingly
  • Providing skilled services and interventions using various techniques that are needed to achieve patient’s goals.
  • Collaborating with all disciplines in planning and evaluating team goals for each patient
  • Choosing activities that will help the residents to carry out their daily activities independently
  • Providing skilled documentation of patient’s condition, and provide caregiver/patient education, progress and need for services.
  • Advising, consults, and instructs members of the multi-disciplinary team in specific occupational therapy modalities
  • Ensuring safe treatment practices and monitors patient’s engagement and responses to treatment, modifies as necessary
  • Observing and reports patient progress and/or changes in patient status to Physician and appropriate multi-disciplinary team members
  • Overseeing occupational therapy assistants providing guidance, discussing progress and monitoring clinical interventions/skills.
  • Organizing and maintaining patient medical and treatment records and documenting therapy sessions and approaches.

Occupational Therapist Basic Requirements:

  • Valid NY State OT license
  • BLS Required
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited occupational therapy school
  • With clinical OT work experience at least 6 months
  • eligible to obtain the Health workers’ Certificate or VCVC

  • Ability to support and encourage patients
  • Empathy and patience
  • Creative problem solving and strong clinical decision making
  • Ability to thrive in autonomous setting and meet expectations for scheduling and caseload management
  • Ability to build rapport with patients – must know how to quickly build trust and be motivated to form long lasting relationships with patients
