Responsibilities

RNs are an important part of the healthcare system and a high-demand position. RNs provide and coordinate direct patient care, as well as providing education to patients about illnesses, diseases, and health conditions in collaboration with doctors and other health care workers. The duties of a Registered Nurse include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing nursing care assessments and nursing care plans
  • Evaluating patients medical needs and health status on a continuous basis
  • Recording patients’ medical history
  • Ensuring patient health records are maintained and accurate
  • Providing activities of daily living (ADLs) to patients in accordance with individualized care plans
  • Obtaining and accurately documenting patient vital signs, weight and all patient related activities by end of shift.
  • Documenting care provided and reporting changes in patient status to shift supervisor
  • Ensuring physician’s medical orders are accurately recorded
  • Administering medications based on conditions and symptoms
  • Ensuring patients’ prescriptions are filled/refilled
  • Monitoring patients’ medication administration sheets to assure that medications are being administered properly, reporting medication errors appropriately, and disposing of outdated or discontinued drugs according to policy
  • Ordering clinical and medical diagnostic exams and tests
  • Interpreting diagnostic exams and tests to identify patients conditions
  • Regularly monitoring the effects of patient’s medications for potential adverse reactions, allergies, interactions, and contraindications
  • Working with other nurses and medical professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients
  • Providing emotional and psychological support to patients
  • Supervising the work of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), nursing aides, and assistants
  • Guaranteeing patients’ confidentiality is respected and kept intact

Registered Nurse Basic Requirements:

  • Current New York State RN license
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association
  • At least one (1) year of hospital experience

Registered Nurse Required Skills:

  • A professional team-player spirit
  • A good attitude and a commitment to maintain a reliable shift/duty
  • Ability to provide outstanding compassionate care
  • Ability to build patient rapport to be able to encourage their patients to move and participate with their treatment program
  • The right attitude and skills in facing challenging situations
  • Patience, compassion and empathy in interacting with patients
  • Ability to remain calm and positive even when patients get frustrated or upset about their injury or ability to make progress
  • Self-motivated attitude
  • A passion for health and wellness
  • A passion for getting to know their patients
  • Experience in a busy hospital
  • Ability to perform physical tasks on a regular basis, including frequent standing, walking, bending, prolonged sitting, stooping, or reaching and/or occasional lifting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
